Itinerary Moray and Maras
Pick up at approx 8am and transfer to the beautiful little town of Maras where we will take some time to explore, before starting our hike to Moray
(approx an hour and a half) which is the hardest part of the trip, mainly uphill!
We will stop for a guided tour of the Inca Ruins of Moray and spend some time at our leisure to take photos and enjoy the Inca agricultural environment.
After, we will then start our hike to the Salt Mines ( 4 hours total) from where we will have beautiful views of Veronica Mountain and also see the local people working the land just like they did 200 years ago.
We will then stop for lunch at around 12.30pm for half an hour on a little creek – we´ll take our time and enjoy the colour view of the landscape.
After having our packed lunches, we will continue our hike to the Salt Mines (total length of hike 2 hours).
We will then stop for a well-deserved beer or soft drink, before taking a guided tour of the Salt Mines
(roughly 30 minutes). We will head back to Cusco around 5pm.
About Moray
Around 50 km (31mi) northwest of Cuzco on a high plateau at about 3500 m (11,500 ft), and just west of the village of Maras. The site contains unusual Inca ruins, mostly consisting of several enormous, terraced, circular depressions, the largest of which is about 30 m (98 ft) deep. Moray was perhaps an Inca agricultural experiment station. As with many other Inca sites, it also has a sophisticated irrigation system. There is quite a temperature difference, as much as 15 degrees between the top and the bottom.
Salt Mines
Since pre-Inca times, salt has been obtained in Maras by evaporating salty water (provided by a nearby subterranean stream) in the sun, leaving the salt behind. In the mines there are thousands of salt-pool
s; when light is reflected there, the effect is said to be quite stunning.
